Effie Gray on Blu-ray and DVD [read more]
  What would the Queen think?!
Sovereign is proud to announce the return of EFFIE GRAY, the true story of a scandal that shocked Victorian England, on 31st May as a special edition Dual Format Blu-ray and DVD, loaded with extras and complete with a booklet featuring Historical Notes written by Historian Robert Hewison and Dr. Suzanne Fagence Cooper.

Nineteen-year-old Effie Gray marries esteemed art critic John Ruskin, a cold and distant man who, seemingly repelled by his young bride, refuses to consummate their marriage. Neglected and shunned, and her health suffering from the strain of the crumbling relationship, Effie defies Victorian society by striking up a friendship with one of Ruskin’s acolytes, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painter John Everett Millais. Its friendship that blossoms into something else, that sends shockwaves through polite society.

When EFFIE GRAY was first released in 2014, Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian said it was 'the film to watch'. Directed by BAFTA winner Richard Laxton (Him & Her), and written by and co-starring Oscar-winning script writer and actress Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Howard's End), the film also stars Dakota Fanning (Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood) as the titular character caught in a scandalous love triangle.

The film features a truly sterling ensemble cast including Greg Wise (Cranford) as Ruskin, David Suchet (Poirot) as Ruskin’s father, and Tom Sturridge (Vanity Fair) as Millais, with supporting roles from BAFTA winners James Fox (The Servant), Robbie Coltrane (Cracker) and Julie Walters (Educating Rita).

Exquisitely made, with a witty and acerbic script exploring Victorian social and sexual mores, EFFIE GRAY is a sumptuous treat, that will delight fans of Rebecca, Bridgerton and Pride and Prejudice, who can watch the film on streaming platforms, or buy it to own in a lavish new special edition dual format Blu-ray + DVD.
