Anita Pallenberg, who leapt to fame as the legendary muse of at least two of The Rolling Stones, has died, it has been announced. An Italian-German model, she was the girlfriend of Brian Jones, and then Keith Richards, during the 1960s and 70s, at which time she made appearances in films as an actress, most famously Barbarella (where she was the villainous queen, not that you heard her voice) and Performance, the ultimate wasted rock star movie where she had a hand in the script, and played one of Mick Jagger's girlfriends in it (she denied she and he ever had an affair).
Other films included two Volker Schlondorff works as part of the German New Wave, the all-star disaster Candy, Marco Ferreri's art movie Dillinger is Dead, and Philippe Garrel's Le berceau de cristal, another art movie where she was seen shooting up heroin, a drug that effectively put paid to her career. After some time out of the spotlight to study fashion, she made sporadic returns to the screen, sometimes in Abel Ferrera movies like 4:44 Last Day on Earth, and also Love is the Devil and Hamrony Korine's Mister Lonely; she was even in an episode of Absolutely Fabulous. |
